Home Made Hot Air Balloon- Toddler STEM Activity

Early Years Science and Engineering!

This week we observed hot air rising! The thinest bin bag I could find and a hair dryer. I used a cardboard tube to deliver the hot air to stop the bag melting to the hair dryer. We also used a bit of tape to make the opening to the bag smaller. Hey presto!

Pop Bottle Sprinkler

This was very successful! I used a sharp knife to carve a hole in the lid and a skewer to puncture the bottle…and done! Will (2yrs) set to experimenting with covering the holes and watching the fountains increase in height!

Pendulum Painting! STEM Activity

Pasta pot, two chairs and a broom, string, paint and paper. Art and Science should never be separated!

This is a fab STEM activity. Investigating pendulums and creating an artistic record of your experimenting at the same time. Depending on the age of your children they can help build the stand, adapt the vessel and tinker with the hole width and viscosity of the paint to get either a smooth line or dots. Or younger ones may just swinging the pendulum with different amounts of force and in different ways to get different patterns.

Easy Catapults! Toddler STEM Activity

Early engineering!

Here are the catapults I made for my Pivots and Levers session!

The plastic milk scoop ones easily out performed the clothes peg design I found in various places on the web! Even my one year old’s fingers were strong enough to work it, much to her delight! Pom Poms made the best missiles!

Catapult painting- STEM + Art

Bit messy but lots of fun! Pop sticks and cut drinking straws! So simple to experiment with different pivot positions. Bottle tops dipped in paint get flung into the air. Haven’t seen this anywhere yet! Brill little Early Years/ toddler STEM Activity.

Simple Lightbox

Here is a very simple homemade light box or light table. Clear box, tissue paper (perhaps from a shoe box) and a LED work torch from Asda (£7.00 ish). Endless possibilities!
