This is a nice activity best for a quiet moment or rainy day with your toddler. It’s cheap a easy to make! We’ve lined thick cardboard rectangles with mirror card and taped them into two and three panelled mirrors. We lined the box with highly patterned wrapping paper. Next we added plastic lenses from our local scrap store, some kaleidoscopes and small toys. Let the experimenting begin!
Pre-school Science
Drain Pipe Slide
There is just something great about this activity. It never gets old! Children simply love washing objects down a tube. We have a full drain pipe and a half pipe.
Washing people down the shoot is great fun but also improves co-ordination, links cause and effect and involves gravity and friction.
So what have we washed down our water spout? Spiders (of course), ice cubes, wooden beads, cut drinking straws, play people, chop tinsel, rubber ducks, boats, sea creatures and plastic fruit and veg…so far!
If you’ve not got one I recommend a trip to your local DIY shop. We got our half pipe for around a fiver!

Picture Frame Weaving
We’ve found another use for our old picture frame at this morning’s Tiny Adventure workshop. Weaving! As a collaborative activity this is lovely.
We used anything we could get our hands on including pipe insulation and bubble wrap!

Light and Shadows Pre-school STEM/ Science Experiments
A lovely calm and cool session on Friday. Tiny Adventurers had the chance to play with light and shadows! The perfect antidote to the summer heat! If you want to calm and cool things down try digging out your torches and closing all the curtains!
We used a sheet and desk lamp to make shadows. We added a variety of opaque and translucent items to play with.
We added glow sticks, torches, mirrored card and light up toys.
We also added Water Bead and Sand Light Boxes!

Cheapest Shampoo Play Slime
Supermarket own brand cheapest shampoo makes a perfect Play Slime! Less than 50p for a big bottle and no preparation time needed. It smells great and pearlescent ones are super for mark making.
We added sparkles, scoops, beakers with holes in and a cheap helter skelter toy (marble runs also work very well).
The key is it has to be viscous enough to move nice and slowly!

Frozen Play Box and Hammer
Freeze almost anything in ice and give a toddler a play hammer. Instant problem to solve! The frozen water balloons where also a great sensory addition. Keep the balloon on and they go squashy as they melt or remove the rubber to reveal a frozen ball. Younger babies love the feel of the objects in the ice.
I think I will try fruit next time.

Big Sponge Fun
More ideas for passing the time on a hot day! Big bit of sponge (from a soft furnishings shop) and a bit of washing up liquid and water. I can’t help but wonder…what if I could get hold of a really big piece that the kids could jump on? Anyone done this?
