Fairy Mud

Messy play but clean! We are making fairy mud pies at Tiny Adventure this week using a ‘clean mud’ recipe. Grated bars of soap, sparkles, lots of cheap toilet roll, water and a lot of squishing produces a lovely clean soapy mud. See Alphabet Mud for more details.

The children also likened it to ice cream! It keeps pretty well too. It may need a bit of water adding to bring it back to life. I expect it would dry in shape too, but I haven’t tried It. Let me know if you have!

Rice Sensory Play Box

Tiny Adventurers recalled their favourite characters and rhymes from In the Night Garden with our Igglepiggle Rice Sensory Play Box.

We coloured the rice green with a little food colouring and added large brightly coloured buttons hidden in the rice. They quickly set about scooping, raking and digging about in it to see what was there.

Next thing you know, it’s raining rice! Isn’t that a pip!

Home Made Gak Play Slime

This week Tiny Adventurers enjoyed playing with Gak play slime. This is a home made slime that keeps because it is a polymer, and is great fun because it behaves is very interesting ways!

This slime can be cut, stretched and takes the shape of moulds. It doesn’t hold it’s shape and slowly oozes. It is a plastic, is not edible and it is dry to touch!

The ingredients for Gak are PVA Glue and Borax powder. There are plenty or instructions for making Gak to be found on the web, here is a good set for GAK in five minutes! Borax is hard to get hold if in the UK and needs to be handled with care. I purchased mine on line. Have fun!

Water Pistol Painting

One of this weeks creative play activities.

20130729-135654.jpgFirst thing is first you need some pistols, so pop to your pound store! Or don’t ! Actually a small pop bottle with a hole in the lid is easier for young toddlers to use, and fires further! We made small holes in each lid using a hammer and a nail.
We pegged up a sheet and watered down some washable paint. Off they when improving their co-ordination while making pretty patterns!
Careful!! This may bring out the toddler in you! Spot the parent above having a little go 🙂

Drain Pipe Slide

There is just something great about this activity. It never gets old! Children simply love washing objects down a tube. We have a full drain pipe and a half pipe.

Washing people down the shoot is great fun but also improves co-ordination, links cause and effect and involves gravity and friction.

So what have we washed down our water spout? Spiders (of course), ice cubes, wooden beads, cut drinking straws, play people, chop tinsel, rubber ducks, boats, sea creatures and plastic fruit and veg…so far!
If you’ve not got one I recommend a trip to your local DIY shop. We got our half pipe for around a fiver!

Light and Shadows Pre-school STEM/ Science Experiments

A lovely calm and cool session on Friday. Tiny Adventurers had the chance to play with light and shadows! The perfect antidote to the summer heat! If you want to calm and cool things down try digging out your torches and closing all the curtains!

20130721-165527.jpg
We used a sheet and desk lamp to make shadows. We added a variety of opaque and translucent items to play with.

20130721-165749.jpg
We added glow sticks, torches, mirrored card and light up toys.

Cheapest Shampoo Play Slime

Supermarket own brand cheapest shampoo makes a perfect Play Slime! Less than 50p for a big bottle and no preparation time needed. It smells great and pearlescent ones are super for mark making.

We added sparkles, scoops, beakers with holes in and a cheap helter skelter toy (marble runs also work very well).

The key is it has to be viscous enough to move nice and slowly!

Frozen Play Box and Hammer

Freeze almost anything in ice and give a toddler a play hammer. Instant problem to solve! The frozen water balloons where also a great sensory addition. Keep the balloon on and they go squashy as they melt or remove the rubber to reveal a frozen ball. Younger babies love the feel of the objects in the ice.
