Light and Shadows Pre-school STEM/ Science Experiments

A lovely calm and cool session on Friday. Tiny Adventurers had the chance to play with light and shadows! The perfect antidote to the summer heat! If you want to calm and cool things down try digging out your torches and closing all the curtains!

We used a sheet and desk lamp to make shadows. We added a variety of opaque and translucent items to play with.

We added glow sticks, torches, mirrored card and light up toys.

Frozen Play Box and Hammer

Freeze almost anything in ice and give a toddler a play hammer. Instant problem to solve! The frozen water balloons where also a great sensory addition. Keep the balloon on and they go squashy as they melt or remove the rubber to reveal a frozen ball. Younger babies love the feel of the objects in the ice.

Seeing Sound- Snap Painting Toddler STEM Activity

Early Years Science and Art.

What I like about this is you get to hear the note, see the vibration, and paint all at the same time! The paint gets everywhere, which makes it fun, and each elastic band vibrates at a different frequency and so has a different pitch, depending on how tight it is.

You need a tray or box lid, bands, paint and paper. Get plucking!

Simple Zip Wire Toy- STEM For Toddlers

A bit of Engineering and Science to get them thinking!

We made a very simple zip wire for our toys to travel down. All you need is string and a couple of coat hangers!

We hashed together this nice wheel to glide down our wire out of bits and bobs!

Giant Bubble Recipe

Here’s a recipe that works really well. We used it for giant bubbles and with a Science Museum kit for standing inside bubbles!

Drums and Rice- STEM: The Science of Sound For Toddlers

This activity links sound and vibration! A good bang on the drum and the rice jumps! How can we make it jump higher? Ear plugs please!

Home Made Hot Air Balloon- Toddler STEM Activity

Early Years Science and Engineering!

This week we observed hot air rising! The thinest bin bag I could find and a hair dryer. I used a cardboard tube to deliver the hot air to stop the bag melting to the hair dryer. We also used a bit of tape to make the opening to the bag smaller. Hey presto!

Pop Bottle Sprinkler

This was very successful! I used a sharp knife to carve a hole in the lid and a skewer to puncture the bottle…and done! Will (2yrs) set to experimenting with covering the holes and watching the fountains increase in height!

Pendulum Painting! STEM Activity

Pasta pot, two chairs and a broom, string, paint and paper. Art and Science should never be separated!

20130624-195436.jpg

This is a fab STEM activity. Investigating pendulums and creating an artistic record of your experimenting at the same time. Depending on the age of your children they can help build the stand, adapt the vessel and tinker with the hole width and viscosity of the paint to get either a smooth line or dots. Or younger ones may just swinging the pendulum with different amounts of force and in different ways to get different patterns.
